Big News in Bridgeport! We are expanding our aval Big News in Bridgeport! We are expanding our avalanche center’s forecast advisory zone! In the past, the Bridgeport Avalanche Center has only forecasted for the Bridgeport Winter Recreation Area (BWRA), a congressionally designated winter motorized area on Sonora Pass. With the forecast zone expanding, you will now see forecast coverage from Mill Canyon south to Green Creek, including the Hoover wilderness, the Sawtooth Ridge, Buckeye Canyon, and the West Walker headwaters. Use the link in the bio to explore the coverage map on the bridgeportavalanchecenter.org homepage.

Our new advisory zone now borders the Eastern Sierra Avalanche Center’s advisory zone. We look forward to having a shared boundary and continued collaboration in Mono County and the Eastern Sierra with our neighboring forecast center. During the winter season, daily avalanche forecast for the Virginia Lakes basin south to Bishop Creek can be found at www.esavalanche.org

Over the past few years, we have installed new weather stations, established beacon checkpoints, built winter trailhead signs, updated the website, and begun issuing danger ratings. The BAC’s progress and growth have only been possible with the help from our various partners and sponsors that help contribute to the center including Mono County, Mountain Warfare Training Center, Yosemite National Park, and of course our dedicated group of volunteers with the Friends of the BAC. If you are interested in supporting the Bridgeport Avalanche Center, please consider a donation to FOBAC or becoming a sponsor. The avalanche occurred on a south aspect near the Hoover wilderness boundary. Plenty of debris is visible from the trail including broken aspens, large boulders, large trees, and even some snow remains. The start zone was hard to identify but 1000ft up was another large debris pile

On the way, we got to see the debris from the Repeat Offender avalanche that occurred in early March. The avalanche was triggered mid-storm near the top of the ridgeline, and not only crossed Leavitt Lake Road but also Leavitt Creek and up the other side of the gully. Impressive to see!-JS
