Bottom Line 3.21.23-The arrival of new snow and st Bottom Line 3.21.23-The arrival of new snow and strong winds have created dangerous avalanche conditions. Large natural avalanches are possible today.  Avoid areas where wind-drifted snow has collected and watch for any cracking or collapsing in the snowpack. Increase your safety margins by taking the time to pause and evaluate your travel routes and acknowledging that conservative decision-making is essential.
3.20.2023 We’re gonna need a bigger SNOTEL….. 3.20.2023 We’re gonna need a bigger SNOTEL….. Leavitt Lake SNOTEL is reading 260 inches (21 ft.) of snow depth and a whopping 103.0 inches of snow water equivalent!! BAC staff spent some time this past weekend at the site in order to help the solar panels remerge. Please avoid driving near or around SNOTEL sensors. Snow compaction can distort the vital data we need for forecasting.

The precursor for wet avalanches are roller balls and pinwheels, watch for them near cliff bands and exposed rocks that amplify the sun's effects.  The firm snowpack will warm throughout the day and may create loose wet instability on south-facing slopes in the afternoon.
