2026 Motorized Rescue Course at Sonora Pass
Free 1-Day Avalanche Rescue Course for Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) Enthusiasts: A Must-Join for Winter Safety
Winter activities such as snowmobiling, off-roading, and other forms of off-highway vehicle (OHV) use are popular in mountainous and snowy terrains. However, these activities come with inherent risks, particularly when venturing into areas prone to avalanches. Understanding avalanche rescue techniques can mean the difference between life and death in an emergency situation. Thankfully, a Free 1-Day Avalanche Rescue Course is available for OHV enthusiasts to equip them with the essential knowledge and skills for avalanche safety.
Avalanches are unpredictable and deadly events that can bury riders under meters of snow in a matter of seconds. OHV enthusiasts, including snowmobilers, off-roaders, and those participating in winter expeditions, are particularly vulnerable when venturing into avalanche-prone areas. By participating in avalanche rescue training, riders can significantly increase their ability to respond effectively in such emergencies, potentially saving lives, including their own. SInce avalanche avoidance skills are considered more critical than avalanche rescue skills, it is recommended, though not mandatory, that only level 1 graduates register for this class (Level 1 can be either motorized or non-motorized). If riding ability hinders participation in a Level 1 course, the Rescue class may be a suitable starting point until riding skills are developed.
Have the ability to ride off-trail in variable conditions. Riding ability is less important on Rescue classes than on Level 1 and Level 2 classes, but participants still need to be able to ride off-trail in variable conditions.
What you will need to attend the class:
- Bring a functioning beacon, shovel, and probe. Beacons should be modern three-antennae, shovels should be made specifically for avalanche rescue, and probes should be 270cm or longer. Avalanche gear must be worn/carried on self, and not in a tunnel bag. An extra shovel in the tunnel bag is recommended.
- Wear a DOT or similarly approved helmet and weather-appropriate gear.
- Ride a reliable, well maintained snowmobile/snowbike, capable of off-trail travel. Machines must be registered with visible registration markings. Spare belts and repair kits are strongly recommended. Poorly maintained machines and/or machines not intended for off-trail travel may jeopardize the experience of others.
- Read the required materials and apply the Daily Flow and Alerts stickers to machines for easy reference while riding.
- Bring a radio capable of operating on FRS/GMRS frequencies. A simple speaker/mic is preferable to voice activated systems.
- This class will be entirely in the field, from 9am-5pm.
You must register for the class as there are limited spots available.
This Free 1-Day Avalanche Rescue Course is designed for OHV riders of all experience levels who want to learn the critical skills required to survive an avalanche incident. In just one day, participants will gain hands-on experience in:
- Use of Avalanche Rescue Equipment: Familiarize yourself with the essential avalanche rescue tools, including transceivers, probes, and shovels.
- Rescue Techniques: Acquire skills in conducting self-rescue and assisting others, focusing on quick response techniques that can save lives in the crucial moments after an avalanche occurs.
Registration for the class will open 6 weeks prior to the class (Dec 6th, 2025)
